He feared the night less now that they had talked, yet he feared it still, all the hours of lying by her side. How could he do that and not react in some fashion? Especially when so far, heâd failed miserably. But at least, he told himself, she knew now how she affected him. Her knowing was infinitely better than him hiding it all the time. Though it didnât dispel his fears entirely. He still wondered if how he felt made him no better than Daniel, whose face had begun to appear in his head at odd moments.
Gerritt muffled it, choosing to concentrate on his marriage instead.
They attracted attention at dinner by holding hands. Michael had looked decidedly confused, his expression causing her parents to gaze back and forth between them. After dinner, Maire went with her father and brother to talk about song choices, not a conversation he needed to be in, and so he found himself face-to-face with Anne OâFallen, and a whole mess of time on his hands.
âWould you like to walk?â he asked, gesturing toward the promenade.
She smiled and stepped out before him, her hair billowing in the ocean air. âIâm surprised Michael hasnât turned green by now,â she said.
Michael OâFallenâs hatred of boats was common knowledge within the family.
âMaybe he has too much else on his mind.â Gerritt stepped to the rail.
She joined him there. âThat could be. Between the concert, arranging the songs, finding practice time, and wondering if you and Maire are actually in love, there is a lot to consider.â
Gerritt visibly flinched at her words. Anne OâFallen had always been direct. She had a way of approaching topics that seemed to come at you unexpected. Here, sheâd done it again, justly deserved. Her sharp gaze met his.
He did his best to act unperturbed âWhat has he decided?â
Her expression never changed. âHe hasnât decided. Heâs still wondering. One minute youâre both cold as a fish, the next youâre holding hands.â
Gerritt turned to her. âAre you wondering as a person or as the mother of my wife?â
Her face creased into a smile. âThe mother of your wife mostly.â
âShe fascinates me.â
Her eyes flared wider. Not, probably, the words she wanted him to say.
âTell me. When you married Mr. OâFallen, how long did it take to fall in love?â he asked. A sudden need to purge himself of his thoughts took hold.
Anne rested a hand on the rail. She still had such youth about her. Even in middle age, her skin was clear and fresh. âHim, two days. Me, two weeks. But we were forced to marry under horrible circumstances. You were not.â
âWho says?â He didnât like the look on her face, but his question was out there. He couldnât take it back.
âGerritt Finnegan, for the love of your mother, explain that statement.â Her expression became a mixture of anger and worry.
He wanted to cause her neither one. âI chose to marry her because someone had to, and she wanted it to be me.â
Her fingers tightened on the rail, and her voice cracked.
